Wave your flag tomorrow – free concerts, parades, pancakes and more

There’s nothing like a Whistler-style parade to celebrate Canada’s birthday so grab your red and white and get ready to wave.

Before the parade kicks off, join Whistler Community Services for a by donation community pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. pancakes will be served up in the Upper Village. All funds will benefit the Whistler Food Bank. The parade kicks off at 12 p.m. at Town Plaza and winds along the Village Stroll, ending at Mountain Square. The parade includes roving street entertainment, 2010 Olympians and Paralympians and a 60-piece marching band.

The parade is led by the Chamber of Commerce and organizers are looking for participants to join in parade festivities.

This year’s theme is “Whistler Spirit – Let’s Hear it!”. Prizes will be awarded for: the most innovative approach to a sustainable float; the best interpretation of the Parade theme; the most team effort, involvement and enthusiasm; and the best musical entry. Volunteers judges will be dispersed throughout the parade route and the winners will be announced at the Après Parade Party in Village Square.

The fun continues at the Après Parade party at Village Square at 2 p.m. with the singing of O’Canada by local performer Rachel Thom, cake-cutting, a 2010 Olympic and Paralympic athlete recognition ceremony and a free Spirit of the West outdoor concert starting at 4 p.m..

Following the Après Parade Party, festivities carry on with a family-friendly party at Ross Rebagliati Park at 7:30 p.m. The party includes a line-up of Whistler’s best acoustic performers, a community mural and an outdoor movie, culminating with fireworks at 10:15 p.m. For more information, check out
