From the Desk of Jim Douglas

July 5, 2010

What a great holiday weekend. While the weather continued with a mix from sun and clouds to the occasional rain shower, it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of guests and locals alike. The beaches and parks were busy and the traffic volumes enjoying the various valley trails was reflective of summer, with all levels of skills riding, in all manners of groups.

Sergeant Dave Smith, Justice (the horse) and Coyote (German shepherd) were hosted this past weekend by Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre (yes, the dog was allowed as we are pet friendly, but horse was kept in Pemberton at acreage) and continues to be most popular with tourists and associates alike. Fresh apples and carrots available through the weekend at the front door made for a great interactive environment for our guests and resident pets. It is such a treat to see the young children, many of which have not seen a horse this close, with the opportunity to feed Justice. Priceless.

The past weekend, I saw for the first time, fresh water otters in Alta Lake. They are so graceful and far too fast for my photo skills……besides, I was trying to catch the Big Cutthroat trout that lurk in Alta Lake. Several small rainbows this past weekend, and I guess the large cutthroat catch will have to wait for another day. You can view a regular fishing report update on http://www.whistlerflyfishing.com/newsletter.cfm?newsletter=8 ,which is compiled by Brian Niska and the team at Whistler Flyfishing, a great little shop with quality gear, local fly selections and great tips for enjoying a day on the water.

The CBC carried a report early this week (link below) on the snow conditions atop of Whistler Blackcomb….while these conditions have been excellent, the forecasted warm summer weather this week will start the big melt. Whistler-Blackcomb reopens with summer snow .

Last week, I forwarded a link to the Tourism Whistler website, which has video and photo content and the link below covers a wider range of video. Specifically, I just love the 2009/2101 winter video http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/video/index.htm. Summer Begins.

The recommended adventure this week is the “River of Golden Dreams” http://www.backroadswhistler.com/rogd.asp, which should be fantastic with the fresh run off to assist with the river levels as well as the warm weather.

Well that’s it for the week! Now that summer has arrived, we will endeavor to post regular content to our blog. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Best regards,

Jim Douglas
