From the Desk of Jim Douglas

July 20, 2010

What a great week of weather, sunny, warm, clear, with cool evenings to keep everything fresh. Simply love the weather at this time of year in Whistler. Mornings are especially pleasant, 6am at any of our local lakes are amazing, the picture here is a sunrise on Alta Lake, but my favorite morning walk is at Lost Lake, simply spectacular.

The alpine trails are now finally open with great access as our record snow base is finally starting to melt.

The past week, I saw for the first time a young bear cooling off in the lake. At first I thought it was the otters that I had noticed earlier in the month, but as I got closer I thought it was a black lab swimming…..however, it was in fact a bear cooling off in the water, and using a half sunken log to scratch his back and neck. I tried to get close enough for a picture, but he was really interested in the boat, and began swimming towards me…well I set down the camera and paddled away, thus no picture. What a neat sight.

I do however have a few nice photos of a special evening with Nick Hill and his father Trevor, who joined me for an evening paddle around the lake. Nick caught a beautiful cutthroat trout, estimated at 5lbs, as well as several smaller trout. You can view a regular fishing report update on which is compiled by Brian Niska and the team at Whistler Flyfishing, a great little shop with quality gear, local fly selections, and great tips for you to enjoy your day on the water.

Well that’s it for the week, now that summer has arrived we will endeavor to get some info regularly to our Blog, and if our readers and guests have any questions, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Best regards,

Jim Douglas
